How Find Found Knowledge
and the Slaying of Cul Dub
On
another occasion Find was in Cend Curraig. There it was
customary for him to be. Every morning a man was entrusted
to cook a pig for him as his day's ration. Once, then,
Oisine was charged to cook it. when he deemed it time, he
put it aside on the points of the fork upon the dish in the
custody of his companion. Then it stuck fast. He turned
about (to go) out. Oisine ran out after him beyond the
Suir, namely over Ath Nemthen, beyond Ord, beyond Inniuin,
beyond Fan hua Faelan to the summit of Sith Fer Femen.
After he went to the fairy mound, the door was closed
behind him. He left Oisin behind.
When Find's followers awakened, then he arrived.
"Where is the pig?" asked Find.
"A braver man has taken it," Oisine replied.
On the following day, Cailte took it. From him it was
carried off in the same way. Thereupon he came (back).
"Where is the pig?" said Find.
"I am not braver than he from whom it was taken yesterday,"
Cailte said.
"Although I go to cook it," said Find, "sharper is each
thorn that is younger."
He went himself to cook it, his spear-shafts in his left
hand, the other hand, however, turning the pig on the
points of the fork. It stuck fast. Find made a thrust at
him. But only the point of the spear then attained his
back. Thereupon he left the belly at Mag Tarra in Lee at
Cell Ichtair (and) the breadth of the side at Toib Muicce.
Seven times he leaped over the Suir.
"Open," he said, "before it," (when he was in the crown of
the hill. "Open," he said, (running) over the (whole)
length of the hill.
"Here is (something) from me!" said Find. He made a thrust
at him as he went into the fairy mound, and thereby his
back broke. His hand stuck fast against the door-post so
that the door-valve closed on his thumb and he put it into
his mouth. Therefore, some say that hence it is that Find
obtained knowledge, for he used to put into his mouth the
portion of his finger that had gone into the fairy mound.
Their wailing was heard.
"What is that?" each said.
"Cul Dub has been slain!"
"Who has slain him?"
"Find hua Baiscni."
They all wail.
Then he (Find) said, "Sweet, sweet (is) the sweet little
language..."
He carried his pig in his bosom, and apportioned it among
his household.
